There are those who specifically attribute the design movement to Japan's spirituality and view of nature. The minimalist design philosophy did not arrive in Japan by way of another country, as it was already part of the Japanese culture rooted on the Zen philosophy. The design was considered an antidote to the "overpowering presence of traffic, advertising, jumbled building scales, and imposing roadways." The chaotic environment was not only driven by urbanization, industrialization, and technology but also the Japanese experience of constantly having to demolish structures on account of the destruction wrought by World War II and the earthquakes, including the calamities it entails such as fire. In Japan, for example, minimalist architecture began to gain traction in the 1980s when its cities experienced rapid expansion and booming population. There are observers who describe the emergence of minimalism as a response to the brashness and chaos of urban life. ģ30 North Wabash in Chicago, a minimalist building by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe With regard to home design, more attractive "minimalistic" designs are not truly minimalistic because they are larger, and use more expensive building materials and finishes. ![]() The works of De Stijl artists are a major reference: De Stijl expanded the ideas of expression by meticulously organizing basic elements such as lines and planes. ![]() Minimalistic design has been highly influenced by Japanese traditional design and architecture. Minimalist architecture became popular in the late 1980s in London and New York, where architects and fashion designers worked together in the boutiques to achieve simplicity, using white elements, cold lighting, and large space with minimum objects and furniture. Minimalist architectural designers focus on the connection between two perfect planes, elegant lighting, and the void spaces left by the removal of three-dimensional shapes in an architectural design. The term minimalism is also used to describe a trend in design and architecture, wherein the subject is reduced to its necessary elements. The reconstruction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's German Pavilion in Barcelona Yves Klein had painted monochromes as early as 1949, and held the first private exhibition of this work in 1950-but his first public showing was the publication of the Artist's book Yves: Peintures in November 1954. Minimalism was also a reaction against the painterly subjectivity of Abstract Expressionism that had been dominant in the New York School during the 1940s and 1950s. Minimal art is also inspired in part by the paintings of Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Josef Albers, and the works of artists as diverse as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio Morandi, and others. In a more broad and general sense, one finds European roots of minimalism in the geometric abstractions of painters associated with the Bauhaus, in the works of Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian and other artists associated with the De Stijl movement, and the Russian Constructivist movement, and in the work of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. Kazimir Malevich, Black Square, 1915, oil on canvas, 79.5 x 79.5 cm, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow The word was first used in English in the early 20th century to describe a 1915 composition by the Russian painter Kasimir Malevich, Black Square. It has accordingly been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and the automobile designs of Colin Chapman. The term minimalist often colloquially refers to anything or anyone that is spare or stripped to its essentials. Minimalism in music often features repetition and gradual variation, such as the works of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Julius Eastman and John Adams. The movement is often interpreted as a reaction against abstract expressionism and modernism it anticipated contemporary postminimal art practices, which extend or reflect on minimalism's original objectives. Prominent artists associated with minimalism include Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt and Frank Stella. In visual arts, music and other media, minimalism is an art movement that began in post– World War II in Western art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and early 1970s. ![]() 4A on Strada Dimitrie Racoviță, Bucharest, Romania, 2017, by Corina Dîndărean Top: Untitled, by Donald Judd, concrete sculpture, 1991, Israel MuseumĬentre: The Zollverein School of Management and Design Essen, Germany, 2005–2006, by SANAAīottom: House no.

A statically scheduled superscalar must check for any dependences between instructions in the issue packet and any instruction already in the pipeline. In-order processors are statically scheduled, i.e., the scheduling is done at compile-time. If instructions are issued to the back-end in program order, we have in-order processors. ![]() Superscalar processors decide on the fly how many instructions are to be issued. A summary of the characteristics of the various types is provided in the table below. Examples include the Intel/HP Itanium processor. Hence, they are also known as EPIC–Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computers. VLIW processors, in contrast, issue a fixed number of instructions formatted either as one large instruction or as a fixed instruction packet with the parallelism among instructions explicitly indicated by the instruction. dynamically scheduled superscalars that use out-of-order execution.statically scheduled superscalars that use in-order execution. There are two types of superscalar processors that issue varying numbers of instructions per clock. Types of Multiple Issue Processors: There are basically two variations in multiple issue processors – Superscalar processors and VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) processors. Suppose if m is the maximum number of instructions that can be issued in one cycle, we say that the processor is m-issue wide. Several instructions are issued to the functional units in the back-end. Several instructions are fetched and decoded in the front-end of the pipeline. Now, in multiple issue processors, we increase the width of the pipeline. We can also increase the depth of the pipeline, which may be required because of the increase in clock speeds. This gets extended with multiple functional units for the execution stage when we look at different types of fixed and floating point operations. Such processors are called multiple issue processors.Ĭonsider the simple MIPS integer pipeline that we are familiar with. For example, if we issue and complete two instructions every clock cycle, ideally we should get a CPI of 0.5. If we want to further reduce CPI, we need to explore the option of issuing and completing multiple instructions every clock cycle. The ideal CPI that we can expect in a pipelined implementation is only 1. So far, we have looked at various hardware and software techniques to exploit ILP. The objectives of this module are to discuss the need for multiple issue processors, look at the different types of multiple processors and discuss various implementation and design issues. 40. The CADR tests measure purifier effectiveness on three different pollutants-tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen-that correspond to particles of 0.09 to 1.0 micron, 0.5 to 3.0 microns, and 5.0 to 11.0 microns, respectively, so in a sense they represent a tougher standard. CADR numbers in effect give the cubic feet per minute of perfectly pure air that a purifier can produce on its maximum setting. Neither Blueair model is rated as true HEPA, but they are certified by AHAM to have clean air delivery rates (CADR) of 350 and 250, respectively, and they performed exceptionally well in our testing, in which we measure each purifier’s effectiveness at capturing HEPA-standard 0.3-micron particles. (For a less technical explanation, see How HEPA filters work below.)Īmong our picks, we have two exceptions to this general rule: the Blueair Blue Pure 211+, our upgrade pick for large spaces, and the Blueair Blue Pure 311 Auto, an also-great pick for standard-size rooms. This NASA study of HEPA filtration is quite technical, but the graph on page 7 and the preceding paragraph do a good job of explaining why HEPA filters are actually most efficient-almost 100% at 0.01 micron-at capturing ultrafine particles below the 0.3-micron HEPA test standard. That conclusion was wrong but understandable, because it was based on the neat but incomplete marketing language used by many purifier makers indicating that HEPA filters captured 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 micron (emphasis ours). In the early months of the pandemic, some media outlets reported that HEPA filters didn’t filter below 0.3 micron and therefore could not capture airborne coronaviruses. ![]() That falls squarely within the particle-size range that HEPA filters capture with extraordinary efficiency: 0.01 micron (10 nanometers) and above. The coronavirus is approximately 0.1 micron (100 nanometers) in diameter. We also discuss the much-hyped IKEA Förnuftig in its own section.Īir purifiers with HEPA filtration capture particles the size of (and far smaller than) the virus that causes COVID-19, so the answer is yes. In a new section, we cover a few other purifiers that fit specific needs, including a purifier for handling VOCs, an especially energy-efficient small-space purifier, and a truly smart air purifier. And it doesn’t keep pace with the AP-1512HH or the Blue Pure 211+ in larger rooms. ![]() But it’s not terribly energy efficient: Running it 24/7 on medium consumes about $300 of electricity over five years, and seven new filters in that period cost $180, making this model slightly more expensive than the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty over the long term. It’s also the cheapest up front of all our picks. It’s attractive and compact, measuring just 14.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches in diameter, and thanks to its display-shutoff feature, it won’t interrupt sleep with bright lights. On medium, it reduced them by more than 92%. It was impressive in our tests, reducing particulates by more than 97% on its high setting in 30 minutes in a 135-square-foot New York office. If you need to clean the air in a space of around 200 square feet or less, the Levoit Core 300 (sometimes listed as the Levoit VortexAir) is a solid and inexpensive purifier. If you prefer the looks, cost, or other features of our also-great picks, know that they match this Coway model in purifying performance. That said, as strong as the Mighty is, its performance is not as singular as it once was, and in recent years many other air purifiers have closely approached our high standards. After nine years, during which we’ve tested more than 50 different air purifiers, we believe that the exceptional Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty is the best among them-as we have since 2015. To us, that means the air purifier should be powerful enough to clean the air in a large living room or playroom, quiet and dark enough for you to sleep near the machine in a bedroom, and inexpensive enough that it’s reasonable to have several units spread throughout your home. To qualify as great, however, an air purifier doesn’t just need to work well it also needs to be robustly engineered and thoughtfully designed. Air purifiers are fundamentally simple machines-little more than a fan and a filter-but a great one can improve your life by reducing airborne allergens such as pollen and mold spores and capturing bacteria, viruses, and smoke from wildfires and other sources.
